Choosing the method of delivery

On the job presentation

For practical skills that involve hands-on application, on-the-job demonstration is a very effective method of training.

Its biggest advantage is that you can perform the task and explain what you're doing while the learner watches you.

Then you can get the learner to do it themselves while you supervise and correct any mistakes they make.

However, there can be drawbacks to this approach, such as:

  • surrounding noise in the workplace, making it hard for your learners to hear you

  • other workers in the area who might get in the way

  • loss of productivity on the machinery that's involved in the training activity.

We've already discussed various ways of overcoming these problems, but you still need to deal with the issues each time you put plans in place to deliver training on-the-job.
