Hints for training workers

As every skilled operator knows, a task is only simple once you've learned how to do it. This is something you should always keep in mind when you're training beginners, especially when it involves a skill that you've been practising for a long time.

The more a task is 'second nature' to you, the more you need to remind yourself not to assume that your learners already know all the ins and outs of what you're doing.

General tips

Here are some general tips on presenting new information to learners who are unfamiliar with the task you're showing them:

  • Present the information in small chunks, so that you don't overload them with too much new information.

  • Make sure that the chunks are sequenced in order, so they can be easily followed.

  • Link the new information to something the participants already know.

  • Allow time for participants to absorb the information.

  • Ensure that participants understand the information, by asking questions and encouraging feedback.
