Section 3: Assessing

Developing assessment tools

Developing assessment tools

You're likely to find that your RTO already has assessment tools for some or even all of the competencies that you need to assess. These may have been developed by the RTOs own staff, or may have come from an industry association or publisher specialising in VET training resources.

Nonetheless, many workplace trainers still like to develop their own assessment tools or customise existing tools they have been given. Here are some reasons why you might need to undertake this process:

  • As a professional assessor, it is your responsibility to make sure that the assessment tool you're using is fully compliant with the Standards and the competency unit it relates to.

  • There may be times when you need to make adjustments to suit local conditions or the needs of the candidate you are assessing.

  • There may be times when you need to design your own assessment tool from scratch, either because no suitable assessment tool exists, or because the context you are assessing in is unique to your own situation.

  • Periodically you will need to 'validate' the assessment tools you are using, and bring them up-to-date with any industry changes or competency modifications that have occurred, as well as any improvements you have identified in your validation sessions.
