Section 1: Training

Choosing the method of delivery

Choosing the method of delivery

There are various ways you can provide training to a learner or group of learners. The approaches you choose from could include on-the-job instruction, off-the job discussions and assignments, or self-paced learning using printed materials or e-learning resources. You may end up using more than one approach for the training program, a method often referred to as blended delivery.

Some of the things you'll need to take into account when you determine which methods of delivery to use are:

  • the type of skills or competencies being covered

  • the characteristics of the learners, in particular their literacy abilities

  • the materials and equipment needed for the skills being learned, and the method of tuition

  • the availability of the learners at certain times of the day or week

  • the availability of training facilities at the workplace.

The following pages of this chapter give a summary of some of the strengths and weaknesses of particular delivery methods.
