Section 3: Assessing

The assessment process

The assessment process

We know that competency based training is not prescriptive about how a person learns or develops their skills and attributes, as long as they can demonstrate that they've reached a certain standard of performance when they carry out a task. But how do you know when a person has met that standard and doesn't need any more training assessment.

There are two distinct 'pathways' to assessment:

Learning and assessment pathway, where the participant is trained and assessed under the same program.

Assessment only pathway, where the participant has already gained the skills and knowledge needed, and only needs to be assessed.

The assessment only pathway also goes by various other names, including:

  • Skills recognition

  • Recognition of current competence (RCC)

  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Each Training Package describes in detail the assessment pathways that apply to the qualifications and competencies it contains. To see the assessment pathways, go to the 'Assessment Guidelines' section or 'Companion Volume' for the relevant Training Package.
