Australian Core Skills Framework

The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) was developed in 2008 to replace the National Reporting System previously used by literacy specialists to assess the LLN skills of adult learners. It uses the term 'core skills' instead of LLN because it includes the additional skill of 'learning'.

There are five core skills:

  • Learning - the ability to use practical strategies to acquire new skills and knowledge and develop existing skills, including LLN

  • Reading - the ability to read and understand texts

  • Writing - the ability to write and use different styles of expression depending on the audience

  • Oral communication - the ability to speak and listen meaningfully

  • Numeracy - the ability to solve problems mathematically and use the language of maths to convey ideas.
