Session titleHow to cross-cut timber with a hand-held power saw

ParticipantsThree apprentice with some experience in using hand-held power tools
Learning outcomesAt the end of this course, the participants should be able to:

  • describe the PPE that needs to be worn when operating a power saw

  • carry out the required safety checks and adjustments on the saw

  • set up and secure the material and use good manual handling practices

  • use safe and accurate techniques to cross-cut timber

LocationQuiet area in the corner of the warehouse
Literacy / numeracy requirementsLiteracy: ability to read job sheet or work order, and ability to mark off completed task.

Numeracy: ability to correctly interpret job specifications, read a tape measure, and add, subtract, multiply and divide measurements.
WHS requirementsPersonal Protective Equipment:
  • safety glasses

  • ear muffs

  • dust mask (if cutting engineered boards)
ResourcesEquipment:
  • power saw

  • spare blade, and spanner for replacing the blade

  • tape measure, square and pencil

  • extension lead

  • 2 saw stools

  • 2 G-clamps for securing timber

  • timber in various lengths and sizes


Learning resources:
  • site SOP (safe operating procedure) for power saw operation

  • operator's manual from saw manufacturer (if necessary)
Methods and techniques
  • Ask questions to check what the apprentice already knows

  • Demonstrate and explain the activity

  • Describe scenarios and pose possible problems

  • Observe the apprentices carrying out the task
Special needsOne of the apprentices has recently returned to work after two days off due to back strain. He is now back to normal duties, but needs to be careful not to revive his injury by over-reaching or picking up heavy items.

Warehouse15 minsIntroduction:
  • outline the types of cutting that apprentices need to do on-the-job with the hand-held power saw

  • describe and show the different types of power saws used by the company

  • ask the participants whether they have used a power saw previously, either at work or at home
30 minsSafety gear and pre-start checks:
  • explain the need for safety glasses and ear muffs while cutting, and the times when a dust mask is required

  • demonstrate how to check that the saw is running safely, including checking blade sharpness, retracting guard, power plug and lead

  • demonstrate how to adjust the depth of cut

  • demonstrate how to change the blade

15 minsSafe Operating Procedure:
  • give participants the SOP and go through all the points, describing why each is important, and what can go wrong if it isn't followed

Outside10 minsBreak
Outside in the carpark 30 minsCrosscutting demonstration:
  • good manual handling practices for carrying, stacking and working with timber

  • how to put the boards on a stable base and secure them, ready for cutting

  • how to measure and mark the length, and draw a line with a square

  • how to plug in the saw, put the lead out of the way and start the saw up to listen for noises or unusual sounds

  • where to stand and how to cut with a flowing action

  • good cutting techniques and dangerous cutting techniques

  • what to do with offcuts and how to clean up

30 minsParticipant's cutting:
  • work with participants to practise cutting techniques, and correct any mistakes that occur
10 minsConclusion:
  • summarise the main points learned in the session

  • ask participants if there are any final questions
10 minsClean up:
  • put all equipment away and clean up area
